website video

For project web, my group and I decided to publish a video on our websites. We thought what would be the best video to put that would get our viewers’ attention? We decided to film a music video of us dressed as cholas remaking a song and singing and dancing while in one of the dirty bathrooms in the library at CSUN. Here is a link to our video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaVJdm5rt2s
Our video is black and white and at the very end it turns to color. The black and white scheme catches people’s attention and makes it seem scary and dirty. We wore big shirts and hoop earrings to look like cholas to add humor to our video. Before we filmed our video we dirtied the bathroom so when we filmed the bathroom, you can see toilet paper all over the floor and sink.
Our video portrays pathos and ethos. It hits people’s emotions because it is a funny video that will make people laugh. It is credible because we are CSUN students that witness these dirty bathrooms. Also because we did not just use any bathroom, instead we used a bathroom in the library at CSUN. This makes our advertisement persuasive because people are able to see the mess in the bathroom through the video so they do not just have to imagine it.

CSU Nasty
Restrooms everywhere are full of germs. The restrooms in the library at California State University Northridge are nasty and dirty. On our webpage we are trying to get students to change the way they use the restrooms here at CSUN. Students need to treat the restrooms here at school as they would if it was their own bathroom at home. They need to clean up after themselves. We used different sources of rhetoric to get our message across to the students. On our webpage we have interviews of students experiences with the restrooms, diseases that are caused by germs from restrooms, pictures of the restrooms in the library, and a catchy music video.
While standing outside the restrooms we waited for people to come out so we can ask them questions about how they felt. All of them were in disgust and felt uncomfortable using the restrooms. They all wish that they were cleaner. Interviewing people brings ethos to our website. The students at CSUN are credible because they are the ones who are using the restrooms daily even though they are also the ones who are making them dirty. Our “About Us” page is also a credible source because we as CSUN students see the problems that are going on the bathroom so we are arguing our case as concerned students that students just like us should clean up after themselves.
Our website links to a page where we listed diseases that could be caused by dirty restrooms. We summarized the information we found from online sources and then at the end bottom of the page we put the links we found for additional information. The links we posted are logic because they are facts. These facts will make people reconsider the mess they leave in the restrooms and hopefully they start to do something about it. The facts of the different diseases will disgust users and make them cautious while using restrooms. Our logical links lead to our viewer’s emotions because they will be disgusted from the facts they read which is pathos.
Pathos is a very important aspect into any advertisement because emotions are what get to people. Our viewers will not only feel disgusted from seeing the alarming pictures we took of the restrooms in the library but they will also get a good laugh when they view our video. On our website we have a photo gallery of pictures of the toilets with stains and tissue paper thrown all around them. There are also pictures of hair balls on the floors and on the sinks. Lastly we have pictures of water droplets all over the floor. These pictures will disturb our viewers in a sense where they will start to pick up after themselves while using the restrooms in the library. Our website links to a page of a video we filmed with the lyrics to the video. Our minute long video is of our group in one of the bathrooms in the library, we sang a song while dancing in the bathroom. We made our video catchy so the next time our viewers use the restroom at CSUN they will think “clean it up” and that will remind them to clean up after themselves.
The library is a place where every student at CSUN goes and uses the restroom. Out of all the locations on campus the restrooms at the library should be the cleanest where instead they have been the dirtiest. The first step into getting clean restrooms where we can all feel comfortable using is by cleaning up after ourselves. It is as simple as flushing the toilet and throwing the napkins in the trash can rather than on the floor. Our website will change the way people view the restrooms and we can all hopefully use these restrooms without having to cringe at everything we see.

Germs are all over dirty public restroom. These germs could cause sicknesses from the common cold to more serious diseases such as STDs. While searching diseases that are caused by public restrooms, I learned a lot and put it on our webpage to inform people so they could take action and start cleaning up after themselves. This online journal was very helpful http://www.askmen.com/sports/health_60/68_mens_health.html. Reading about the different germs and diseases had me cringing the whole time because of how disgusted I was. The diseases part of our website is a source of pathos and ethos because the facts about diseases make people feel disgusted. Our diseases page also has a very effective picture.
The first thing I noticed from this website that we got information that caught my attention right away and had me cringing was this picture. The picture was taken at a public restroom. There is graffiti and stains all over the restroom. I would rather pee myself then ever have to use a restroom that looks like this. I cannot even imagine the different types of germs and viruses that are in this bathroom. We included this picture on our website on the diseases page so our viewers could see how disgusting public restrooms could be. I believe pictures are a very important aspect to websites because a lot people rather get a message out of a picture than have to read paragraphs of our information. We had a discussion in class a few weeks ago about how pictures are very effective and how people can see different points from looking at a picture in different ways. The angle that this picture is shot at makes it more effective because of how the sink is front and it looks darker than the back of the photo where most of the action is.

For my site visit, my group and I decided to go to the Dodger Stadium. We got our own private tour and we were able to see things that others that come to watch the game have never seen. The Dodger Stadium looks over LA, where you can see the beautiful palm trees, tall buildings, and busy streets. The parking lot for the stadium is so big and there are so many different entrances, it’s definitely a place where you can get lost. My first thought on walking at the top level of the stadium was ‘woah this place is so big and beautiful.’ At the very top you could see the Hollywood Hills and all the cities around. I could only imagine how beautiful it probably looks at night where you can see all the lights.

The stadium has 56 thousand seats! The colors of the seats represent the different parts of California. You would think the seats just represent price range, the ones at bottom are way more expensive than the ones on top but it actually has more meaning than that. The seats closest to the field are yellow for the sunshine, then they get a little orange for the sand, the blue seats are for the oceans and skyline, and the green seats represent the land and grass. The visitors sit on the side of the field where the sun faces while the Dodger fans are comfortable in the shade. We were able to go inside the suites and view the field from there. The suites were really big and they had about five televisions, so not only can you watch the game live but if you can watch other channels too. The couches were also nice and comfortable. The suites basically look like your own room where you can have your own private party while watching the game. The box seats are the best seats in the house! They get a really good view, comfortable seats, and unlimited food. But that all comes with a big price you have to pay. I was able to sit in the seat and it definitely was way more comfortable than the ones at top because it had a cushion to it.
On our private tour we got a chance to get on the field and sit at the dugout. There are advertisements everywhere from the score board, to all around the field, to the dugout. The stadium makes a lot of money for advertising different companies. The grass on the field is very well taken care of and it looks so nice. Our tour guide told us that unlike many other stadiums the Dodgers have real grass on their field. The dugout had a water fountain where the players drink from and we were able to drink from it. We saw where the players walk from to the field. While walking to the locker room the players pass a hall of famous player’s jerseys and there is an empty spot so the players can think if I play really good and do my best then maybe one day my jersey will make it up on the wall.

We went into the room where all the writers and media people sit to watch the game and take notes. Every company has their own section where they sit. Our guide told us that during the time of the game no one is allowed to make a single peep in that room. It has to be completely quite. It must be really hard to be that quite especially during final or champion games. They don't want there to be any bias in that room.

I loved getting a tour of the stadium. At first I thought it was going to be boring because I have gone to the Dodger Stadium before and the only thing that I thought was special was that it's really big. But during the tour I started to realize all the cool things I have noticed like the seats, the view, the advertisements, the suites, and the food places. The Dodger Stadium is a beautiful place that makes LA look cooler.

Explicit Detail
While reading some of the different essays in “Another City Writing from Los Angeles,” there were some stories that I felt had unnecessary detail. The two stories that caught my attention the most within this aspect were “Cactus” and “Maternity.” In the writing Cactus by Tara Ison, I really liked the story until the end when the writer was going into detail with the sex scene, it was disturbing. With “Maternity” by Amy Grestler the whole story had so much explicit detail because it was about her sister giving birth.
When I was reading these stories I was very disturbed by the detail and I thought it ruined the whole story. I thought the detail was unnecessary and the writer in Cactus could have just said that she slept with her ex-boyfriend’s brother without telling us all the nasty stuff she included.  Ison uses detail throughout her whole story but I was disturbed only at the end because I am not use to reading stuff like that.
In the story “Maternity” Grestler walks her readers through her sister’s birth. The story was good and I enjoyed reading it but I felt like she could have written it without making me want to vomit at some parts. While reading the story I was able to picture the whole scene of her niece’s birth, and that’s a scene I did not want to picture.
After discussing it these stories with the class I realized that the detail was put there on purpose. The detail got me to keep reading even though I thought it was disgusting, I still wanted to read because I was intrigued on what is going to happen next. The writers did not put all that detail to disgust me, they put it so I could imagine what is going on. The scene I pictured while reading the last page of “Cactus” made me think that Tara did not have feelings for her ex-boyfriend’s brother but she was having sex with him because she missed him. Ison does not flat out say that in the story but with the detail she uses, I was able to pick it out. The detail used in these stories is not unnecessary; it actually makes the story a lot better and more understandable.

Chaos

When I think of Los Angeles I think of disorder. Some areas are very nice and classy and some are very poor. In the low class areas you’ll see people selling drugs and you’ll hear gun shots at night. Driving through the streets of Los Angeles, I see it as scary and dangerous not knowing that it used to be worse than what it is now. In 1992, Los Angeles went through chaos and destruction because of the Rodney King Riots. African American people felt like their rights were being violated so they started protesting and turning against the law.
People come to Los Angeles as tourists expecting to see celebrities, Hollywood, and all that glitz and glam not knowing what really is behind it. It is seen differently from outsiders but once you walk the streets of Hollywood Blvd. you see the gangs, people snuggling drugs, the prostitutes and all that turmoil. During the riots people were destroying each other’s property and businesses. Can you imagine seeing people walk into store taking whatever they want and then setting it on fire? It’s hard to imagine people that heartless and crazy. If something like that were to happen right now while I live in LA, I would think the world is coming to an end just because it seems that unbelievable.
Hearing about the Los Angeles riots has modified my views about the city. Before reading the essay “Los Angeles” I pictured the city the way many tourists view it. Even though I am knowledgeable about the high crime rate in certain parts of Los Angeles, I did not realize that 20 years ago, the violence was much more serious. The word “chaos” does not do justice to the events that occurred during the period of riots.
If it wasn’t for this essay I read, I would have never known about the riots. This saddens me because this should have been taught while I was in school. In my history classes from the first to twelfth grade I learned about America, California, and other countries but not once were the Los Angeles rights mentioned. Maybe the riots were never mentioned in school because it was an event that happened in only one city, maybe because it was only 20 years when this event took place, or maybe they were taught in school but not in any class I took. I definitely believe the riots should be taught in school and that every student in Los Angeles should know about this important event. The riots marked a period in Los Angeles history.

Learning Poetry
In my narrative, I will be talking about the very first time I was introduced to poetry till the way I read and write poem today.
I was introduced to poetry when I was in kindergarten. My teacher would read us a book every day. One day she read us the book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss. That book became my favorite; I loved the way words rhymed. Throughout my early years of elementary, I would always check out the Dr. Seuss books because I found them the most entertaining.
In the third grade, I was assigned to write a poem. I thought poems were all about making the words rhyme. The poem I wrote was a few lines long and it was about my last name because a lot of words rhyme with bunny. The poem I wrote didn’t make much sense but it was funny.
I have learned more and more throughout all my years of going to school. Once I started high school, poems got more serious, and they weren’t all about rhyming anymore. They actually have a meaning to them now, even though the meaning could be hidden and you have to dig it out.
